Memoirs of a Geisha

“For my world is as forbidden as it is fragile,
without its mysteries, it cannot survive.”

Shizako Hoshi, Sayuri narrator

The declaration above has stunned me from the beginning of the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha." At first, I was curious why a geisha was fragile and why her mytery had to be hidden.

Memoir of a Geisha is the movies that catch my eyes. Every scene proceeds so incredible through combining the great techniques of light setting. The melodies of solo violin could bring me to the feeling of this secret memoir of the great artist for that time. It deserved to get the Golden Globe winner in best score, for John Williams.

Though there is some interrupted of the Ziyi Zhang’s performance (Sayuri), considered not as good as Gong Li does (Hatsumomo). Without the glamorous light and costume Ziyi Zhang would not be the successful in Geisha’s performance. Throughout the film Gong Li could display the passions of a Geisha that are longing for love and finally losing everything. She could reinforce the audience to hate her being touchy, yet feel sympathy for her behavior in the same time.

Why does she have to be envious with Sayuri and Pumpkin?

What will have happen after she had left the house?

Leaving some dialogue for characters to speak in Japanese could help the audience to feel about the scent and flavor of being oriented. Though the audience might not know the meaning of Japanese language, the scenes and the performances could help in getting the surface meaning.

Many believe was portrayed in this movie. For example, the pray that Sayuri did in the temple was proved that it could become true, and the striking of stones brought good luck for the geisha. Those believes told me that in every life we have a chance to believe and hope in a particular thing. One of the most interesting aspects is not waiting for the chance to come but go and reach for it.

Another apect about asian women portrayed in the 'Memoirs of a Geisha' and another western movies are the submissive and oppression asian women gain from men or the authority people. The images of asian women portrayed in the western film mostly seem to be negative. Like the movie 'Curse of Golden Flower', Gong Li is portrayed as the aggressive, unaffair and betrayal. However, she did so because she had been oppressed by her husband. In 'Miami Vice', Gong Li is the representative of Asian woman who are inloved in the illegal business. The images of exotic and submissive of asian women also portrayed in the 'China Doll', a fillipino woman whose charateristic is exotic and hyper-sexual who is desired by the white men.
As long as the idea of orientalism still occurs in every single western man, the negative pictures of submissive and oppressed asian women will be filmed forever.

Memoris of a Geisha in one respect this film demonstates of geisha culture in Japanese tradition and custom. "Gender Inequaility" is obvious throughout the film, when wealthy Japanese men are searching for their pleasures. "Agony and beauty" as far as the role of women in this film concerned, mostly they do exist as an object of sexual attention.
Sayuri represents the sincere love toward the chairman as she says "I will lock away my heart and safe if for him" Actually, I thought he life was lucky in game but unlucky in love...thanks for her fate that eventually he returns back and appreciated what she had done. Besides the unfair culture of feminism, It was a happy ending and I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

This movie displays many beautiful scenes that I like such as Japanese bridge, towns, and flower gardens.Zhange Ziyi is really beautiful with her blue eyes. However,I feel that it is little bit unreal that they use a chinese woman playing the role of Japanese woman. Talking about world of geisha,I feel pity for them that they have to hide their feeling all the time.I feel like deeply they are repressed. The character of Zhang ziyi tries to escape from that oppressed world by doing anything. One interesting scene is when westerners enter the world of Japan changing all the role of geisha. For example, the role of pumpkin, she's changed a lot and it's look like she's happier that she does not have to follow stict rule of geisha anymore.

Memoirs of a Geisha is one of my favorite movies this year. The story of Shiyo (or Sayuri) is very common for the Japanese women in that period that the parents will sell their daughter to the brothel out of poverty. For me This movie reflected one face of history that the women are always subject to changes and opression in the societies. They were abused by patriachle society that looked at women as objected of pleasure, without feelings. As it can be seen in th emovie that Sayuri said "Geisha must have no feeling, cannot love. They are the artists in the floating world." This is very sad, but true, and made me think that an oppressed human can rise to reach their goal but it is such a deluded and uncertain goal, like a struggle for a loved one, who may not return the half of Sayuri's honesty.
