Romeo and Juliet 1996
Modern world presents the old world
Do you like using modern customs in Romeo and Juliet? Or does it degrades the classical value of this movie?

Romeo and Juliet (1996) is the movie that uses all modern styles such as cloths, hair styles, songs, etc to replace the original custom in the very past. Anyway, one thing that the director still preserves in this movie is the classical way of characters’ talking.

I think it is a very effective way to invite young people in this generation who are not interested in old literature because of the hardship of understanding complicated poems to see it.

There are modern styles of summer cloths for beach boys. Cool sport cars are used to replace horses. Beautiful guns can be substitutes for swords. Modern songs such as cardigans’s love fool are used to support the modern style.

Somehow the minor plot in this movie has been changed .In the original book,Romeo is a master of sword. He uses his sword to kill Paris. On the contrary, Romeo in this movie never uses skill of his fighting at all. In the movie, he never fights with anybody. We see only he crashes his car and kill Tybalt with his luck. And he does not fight with Paris.

This may raise the issue whether changing this may spoil the original plot or not.

But for me, I think it is good that Romeo in this story is not the perfect hero who can win anyone. He’s just a boy who engages in strong emotion such as love and hate. The main plot is still strong in the movie.

All of theses can capture attention of young people very well. They can feel like it’s the world they live in and they can share the same feeling in the story.Morever,it doesn’t spoil the classical theme of the original story.

The remarkable scene in the Romeo and Juliet is when Romeo fist met Juliet through the fish case. The color tones of the movie are extraordinary.

Does anyone notice the numbers of water scenes?

We should give the big credits for Craig Pearce and Baz Luhrmann, the talented screenplay adaptors who do not change the essence of the original movie. The remaining of poetry in the script reminds me that this is the new version of Romeo and Juliet. Though there are many violence scenes, I would concede the ability of creating the new perception learning poetry.

This film is a revise version of Shakespeare's play, with the replacing of swords to guns and ancient castles to modern concrete buildings, and is directed for younger, modern viewers. However, the film contains the original conversation of all characters. We can see weapons through the lines in the play, so we can see many long sword replaced by the modern guns.

I agree that this new version with Claire and Leonardo is an interesting way to capture teenagers or new generation attention by spicing it up with new customs and as you said changing from sword to gun suit to the new modern world. In this era, in order to be different is a pitch of the movie. The communication channel to young people would be easier for them to get a sense of the original one without boredom. However, I still like the original one as well in terms of the romance of art.

In my opinion this adaptation of Shakespeare's romeo and Juliet is very creative and clever. The director brought the classic play that most people know its plot (beginning until end) well into a modern and stylish movie. I like the way the director has captured the theme of the play to adapt into present situation, such as teenage rage, drug use, revenge and love. The movie is full of colours and craziness of characters which reflect the world of high class people or celebrity which are filled with rediculous things and craze. The parents only care about their faces and do not care about their children's desire. I think it is an honest yet creative adaptation of Shakespeare's romeo and Juliet.
